This site is affectionately dedicated to Truman "Butch" Yeaw who first envisioned its creation, and who's memory lives on in gratitude and appreciation.
Merrill Gas was founded in 1946 when Henry & Marjorie Merrill purchased several 100 lb. Gas tanks from Perry Whitney. Along with the tanks, the Merrill's inherited 250 customers from Whitney whose operation was part of the Old Crystal Ice Company in Brattleboro. The Merrill's, along with one other employee, continued their business of exchanging cylinders and providing service for the next four years.
It was 1950 when the Merrill's found themselves in need of a helping hand. That help came from Dwight Henry who was brought on to handle the duties of service and exchanging cylinders. Six years later Henry was placed in charge of daily operations until 1960 when he was named manager of Merrill Gas Co., Inc. Henry remained at Merrill gas until 1991 when he retired not only as manager, but vice president as well.
In 1989, with Henry's retirement nearing, Truman "Butch" Yeaw was hired to learn the managerial ropes of Merrill Gas. Butch eventually took over in 1991 where he remained manager/vice president until his unexpected death in December of 2002. Butch however was no stranger to Merrill Gas. In 1967 Butch had served as both delivery driver and service technician. He then left the company to serve in the US Military where he was highly respected and highly decorated. After his military retirement he came back to Merrill where he was loved and respected for his leadership and friendship.
Later with Butch's untimely passing the leadership of Merrill Gas was passed to Matthew Henry who stepped in as general manager. A tribute to the guidance and leadership Butch had endowed, Matt has successfully continued to lead Merrill Gas in the same tradition of quality and service customers have grown to expect.
Consistent dedication and quality service provided by the Merrill's and their employees began to pay dividends as a once small Merrill Gas expanded to larger facilities. Realizing the need for bulk storage Merrill Gas Co. relocated in 1963 to its present location of 55 Depot Street (formerly know as Off Bridge Street) in Brattleboro, where we presently have 48,000 gallons of storage.
Now, 57 years later Merrill Gas has 12 full time employees, four delivery trucks, four service trucks and delivers more than 1.5 million gallons of product a year to our 3500 plus customers. We offer 24-hour emergency service to our customers and pride ourselves on our friendly "family" atmosphere and the work that we do.
A true testimony to Merrill Gas is the fact that many of our original customers remain with us today. We currently service Windham County and all surrounding towns in MA & NH. Our office hours are Monday through Friday 8am - 5pm.
